John Rossall (Sax, Trombone & Musical Director), Gerry Shephard (lead guitar and vocals), Tony Leonard (Drums), Pete Phipps (Drums and Keyboards), John Springate (Bass & Vocals) and Harvey Ellison (sax) were soon to outgrow being a backing band.  It was during 1973 that John approached Mike Leander and requested that his band have a shot at fame themselves, a little reluctant and after some fancy persuasion by John and the rest of the band he agreed and booked them some studio time at the top recording studio of the time 'Mayfair'.The Band all had ideas for what songs they could do, but mainly it was thought that they would try their hands at writing some original material. At Mayfair the band recorded three tracks, 'You Wouldn't Leave Me Would You', 'Teenager In Love' and 'Everybody's Dancing'.  Feeling very proud of themselves the tape was handed over to Mike Leander, who promptly gave it them back and told them they had better think again if they wanted a hit record.  Tails between their legs John Rossall took the boys back to the studio to record 'Angel Face'.  The morning after handing in the tape with 'Angel Face' on Mike rang John Rossall and told them to get to his office.  At a meeting several days later Mike told John Rossall, that he felt that they could improve on the 'Angel Face' song, he himself had a couple of ideas and John Rossall and Gerry were asked to re-think the lyrics and backing, John Springate was given the task of uplifting the bass line. Pete Phipps joined the guys as they rehearsed in an old run down garage in Sheffield until they came up with the song that we all know and love.
